Mikin Patel – lead pharmacist in gastroenterology at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust – discusses the lifestyle interventions recommended by the National Institute for health and Care Excellence for treating reflux, such as modifications to diet, increasing exercise and reducing alcohol.

Mr Patel also discusses pharmacological therapy including alginates, antacids and over-the-counter proton pump inhibitors and their place in the management of reflux.

Mr Patel says it is important to find and determine the root cause of reflux by asking the right questions during the consultation and referring patients for further advice if they present with any red flag symptoms.
